Hand Tool, 1933-1942

Some of the most common outdoor photographs of the CCC workers show them with common hand tools—most particularly the pick shovel used for digging trenches and the hammer and saw used in building construction. But each camp also had an assortment of tools that kept the mechanical equipment and vehicles in working order. One such tool is this CCC-stamped open-end wrench manufactured by Billings & Spencer Company of Hartford, Connecticut. Its S-shaped handle has rectangular slots at both ends to fit specific bolt and nut sizes. It may have been used in repairing heavy equipment such as a bulldozer.
