A good broad axe was one of the most important tools in the hand hewing of wooden beams and timbers used in much of the rustic CCC construction. Use of the broad axe leaves an undulating pattern of shallow scoops which identifies the hand-hewn beam. In parks such as Bastrop State Park, which included many rustic details, tools such as this were in constant use.
